The cornell women earned their 1st victory of the season against yale
yesterday. The final score was 5-3.

Yale opened the scoring at 4:35 [Mara McAdams from Katherine Westgate and
Catherine Balco] of the the 1st period. Yale was lucky to escape the first
period with a 1-0 lead. Cornell seemed to have the control of the play
through the period, but could not capitalize on their scoring
opportunities. The yale goalie, Sage MacLeod, seemed to give up alot of
rebounds. However, CU's offense couldn't put them away.

Yale added another goal early in the second [Cathy Jones from McAdams] and
was putting quite a bit of pressure. Cornell got back into the game at the
9:24 mark when Andy Schmalz scored a power play goal. She took a really
nice shot that found the upper corner of the net. Because of all the
cheering, I didn't check who the assists were credited to. Yale regained
their 2 goal lead when Deborah Blanchard [from Lauren Schlesinger]
capitalized on a bad clearing pass @ the 11:45 mark.

In the third, Cornell played very well and was rewarded for their efforts.
Kerry Hammond pulled CU within 1 @ 3:51 [Christine Stewart got one of the 2
assists]. At 13:24, Stewart got a goal of her own [from Hammond and ?] to
tie the game. I think it was before Stewart's goal that Jennifer Wilson
had a golden opportunity to tie the game. She had a breakaway, got a good
shot off, but could not put the rebound in the net. With the score tied at
3-3, the 50 some odd people their to watch CU started screaming "let's go
red" and the women, tasting a possible victory responded. Andy Schmalz
[from J. Wilson and Tracey Cornell] scored the game winner with just over a
minute to go. Andy finished off a very fine game with the empty netter @
17:45, her 3rd goal of the game.

Putting in strong performance for CU were Schmalz and Tracey Cornell. I
also like the play of defenseman Stacey Hutton. She is a good solid and
physical [well, as physical as they will let you get in women's hockey]
blueliner who will also take advantage of an offensive opportunity. In
goal for CU was Sarah Brewster. After a shaky start, she played well in
the final period.

This afternoon, Cornell goes for 2 in a row against the Harvard Crimson. I
hope to catch the last two periods of that game.
