Actually, there are *51* Division I college hockey teams. Maybe the
reporter was looking at TCHCR, where only 44 teams are listed--only
44 play 20+ D1 games and are thus eligible for the tournament.
 
But John is more correct than the reporter. Many Division I hockey
teams come from non-Division I schools (LSSU & FSU in this area, for
example).
