Well, what do you know.

From the March 5, 1986 issue of THE POLYTECHNIC, page 27

by Mike Machnik, Staff Writer

"On Saturday night, the Engineers lost a tough 7-6 overtime game to the Big
Red of Cornell at the Houston Field House, who subsequently vaulted over
Rensselaer into third place with a record of 13-6-2, ready to face Vermont
in ECAC playoff action. Rensselaer saw leads of 4-1 and 6-4 vanish as
Cornell took the victory. [The "Rensselaer" was the editor's doing, I
always wrote "RPI".]
...
"Then it was time to open the history books and add another page. On the
power play, senior Mike Dark received the puck from Mark Jooris and fired a
shot that was stopped. Maurice Mansi rammed home the rebound for his fifteenth
goal, but more importantly, Dark's assist gave him 100 career points, the
first Engineer defenseman ever to reach that plateau. Dark, known primarily
for his defensive work, deserves immense congratulations for this accomplish-
ment. Way to go Darkie! [forgive me, I was 19.]

"Rensselaer opened it up to 4-1 on another Mansi power play goal, 1:28 into
the second period, on assists from Jooris and Dark. But after Neil Hernberg
and Dark were invited to the Penalty Box Cafe, giving Cornell a five on three
advantage, third leading scorer Duanne Moeser lifted the puck over Jopling
and into the net, after Jopling was unable to control the rebound of a shot
by Chris Norton.

"Two minutes later, it was time for an oddity. A delayed penalty was
whistled on Cornell's Dave Crombeen, and Jopling skated towards the bench for
an extra attacker. But at the same time, Jooris passed the puck back to a
defenseman who wasn't there, and it slowly rolled in before anyone could get
to it. The goal was credited to Crombeen, being the last defender to touch
it, and as a reward he was sent to the box for four minutes. [RPI scored
on the ensuing power play.]
..."

So the infamous goal came at 8:28 of the second period and made it RPI 4,
Cornell 3. Trailing 5-3 after two, Cornell outscored RPI 3-1 in the third
and got the winner from Peter Natyshak at 6:21 of overtime. Cornell was
outshot 58-33 but Doug Dadswell made 52 saves. BTW, this was when OT was
ten minutes.

Joe Nieuwendyk had three assists in the game, including setting up the winner.
