This site also has the history of the Houston Field House:

> The "Home of the Engineers," Houston Field House saw its first
> hockey game January 10, 1950 between Rensselaer and Middlebury. Ned
> Harkness, who was the Engineer coach that day, also played a major
> part in bringing the Field House to Troy. Although Rensselaer fell
> in that contest, 8-2, the Engineers would soon be on its way to a
> winning tradition that still exists today.
>
> Originally known as the RPI Field House when it opened in October,
> 1949, the Houston Field House has staged many major events in its
> history. The guiding policy today, as on the day it was conceived,
> is "the enrichment of the students of Rensselaer and the people of
> the larger surrounding community."
>
> The Field House was initially a Navy warehouse at Davisville, Rhode
> Island, and through federal and Rensselaer funding, the Institute
> was able to obtain the building. Three-quarters of a million dollars
> were used to convert the shell to its original facility, and at that
> time, it was recognized as one fo the most versatile installations
> of its type in the country.
>
> In 1983, the Field House was renovated to its present condition.
> Some of the construction that took place was a new roof was put on,
> several support poles were removed and a new support was added, the
> ice rink was lowered by 2 1/2 feet, and a new locker room, weight
> room and training facility were added.
>
> The facility was used originally by the Rensselaer students to play
> basketball, tennis and hockey. Today, due to the addition of other
> sports facilities found on campus, the Field House is used primarily
> for ice hockey and figure skating.
>
> The Field House has hosted a variety of events over the
> years--dances, public meetings, exhibits and weekly ROTC drills to
> name a few. But, as a result of the construction of modern arenas,
> the Field House has lost its abiliby to compete for concerts or
> large exhibit events.
