Game two of hockey*4 weekend, Saturday afternoon at Bright found the
Big Green of Dartmouth winning a tight match 0-2 from the Harvard
Crimson. Dartmouth used a relaxed game plan to score the goal it
needed to be victorious. Harvard continues to load its new system
and develop their skills.

There was no scoring in the first period. In the second, Phoebe
Manchester (Michelyne Pinard) defected in a shot from the point on
a power play. The situation developed quickly from a face-off and
the deflection came through a screen of players. In the final period,
Big Green mounted some major pressure, and a number of lovely break
in plays but couldn't score. Finally in the last minute of the game,
Dartmouth had a power play, and the Crimson pulled its goaltender to
try and tie up the game. Rachel Rochat skated up ice and flipped the
puck into the empty net to seal the Big Green victory.

Dartmouth seems to be in a building process. They are playing three
pretty good lines, but all need work. In goal first-year player Sarah
Tueting looked very strong. She used a stand-up style and had a fairly
quick glove. On defense Pinard and Sara Vogler were one pair, while
Amy Coelho and Jennifer Lane were another. Today I liked the play of
Pinard who was strong at both ends of the ice. Coelho is also a
very good defender who reads well, and provides a good foundation
for the team. The Big Green top line is Sarah Devens, Sarah Howald
and Rochat. Devens is an excellent forward. Her skating is first-
class stuff. She was their outstanding player making numerous solo
rushes and working very well with Rochat. The second line was Jessica
Clark, Manchester and Malaika Little. First-year player J. Clark
played a heads-up game doing some fine fore-checking and making some
good rushes with Little. Little also played a good game. The third
line was Emilie Schnitman, Sarah Hood and Michelle Erickson. I
thought Hood looked like a center with some good potential. She is
big, very good at face-offs, back-checks well, but needs to improve
her skating. Overall I liked watching Dartmouth. They were using
a relaxed offense where only two players go in deep, while the
trailer hangs out at the blue line waiting for chances. Defensively
it works, but it doesn't always create that much offense, as was the
case today.

Harvard continues its on-the-job training. I would guess coach Stone
is working them very hard in practice. They all look tired. The woman
of the match for the Crimson had to be goalie Erin Villiotte. Always
a tower of strength in the net, she kept Dartmouth from opening up a
big lead. On defense Holly Leitzes lead the way. Her tough character
and good skating cover for the team often. Winkie Mleczko is starting
to play well again. The skating still needs help, but with her large
reach, her reads were better today. Colleen Malek also is slowly
starting to get back to playing solid defense. Up front, Ellen
Frump was the best skater. She was being used as a digger for
the first line today. I would vote to use her, or Diana Clark as
the fourth defender, because both never look as good at forward.
Christa Calagione made a couple of good solo rushes this afternoon.
Jenny Duval, centering the third line, and getting a chance on the
first line late in the game, was moving and playing much better.
Diana Clark, centering the second line, also looked quicker. Overall
the Crimson played Dartmouth pretty tough. It will be interesting to
see both teams later in the season.
