Summary:

Union opened their 1994-95 ECAC season with an impressive win over
St. Lawrence. The Dutchmen outskated and outworked the Saints, who
looked sloppy for most of the game.

Ryan Donovan opened the scoring for Union with a power play goal. The
other story in the first was Trevor Koenig, Union's freshman goalie,
who stopped all 12 shots he faced.

The Dutchmen got the offense going in the second. Andrew Will came in
on a 2-on-1, and opted for the shot, and put a high hard shot the puck
past Owen just under the crossbar. A few minutes later, Troy Stevens
sent a pass from behind the net out to freshman Charlie Moxham, whose
one-timer was good for his first career goal. The scoring continued
on a pass up ice from Chris Hancock off the boards to Cory Holbrough,
who snuck in behind the defense and beat Owen to give the Dutchmen a
4-0 lead. After St. Lawrence got on the board, Union scored a
shorthanded goal that came following a 2-on-1 break for the Dutchmen.
Dean Goulet carried the puck in with Chris Albert, but carried the
puck around behind the net and hit Chris Albert out in front to get
back the 4-goal lead.

After SLU scored a power play goal in the third period on a neat
wraparound by Murphy, the Dutchmen closed the scoring when Russ
Monteith took a pass from Chris Albert in the corner, but was pulled
down while taking a shot. From his back, Monteith was able to get a
stick on the puck and put it past Owen.

The Dutchmen go to 1-0 in the ECAC and 3-1 overall, while the Saints
are 0-1 in the ECAC, 1-3 overall. Clarkson will be at Achilles
tonight, and St. Lawrence will play at RPI.

The thing that stands out in this game is the crisp passing by the
Dutchmen, an area where Union has had a disadvantage over the last few
years. Just about every scoring chance was set up by a nice, sharp
pass. Trevor Koenig was also very impressive in net for Union,
getting his second straight start over seniors Mike Gallant and Luigi
Villa. Just about everyone played well for the Dutchmen, but some of
the players who seemed to stand out included Charlie Moxham, Russ
Monteith, Troy Stevens, and Jon Sicinski.
