Last night's Boston College - Northeastern Beanpot semifinal
was a thing of beauty from start to finish, and it had just
about everything a hockey connoisseur could want. BC beat
the Huntington Hounds, 5-3, but not before the Eagles were
exposed to a brick wall named Tom Cole, who made 51 saves
on the night, one short of the tournament single game record.
The first period was scoreless, as BC outshot NU, 19 - 12. In
the second stanza, when each team tallied for three goals apiece,
Cole faced a stunning 27 shots while his counterpart, Sandy
Galuppo, faced only 6. Cole was unbelievable, stopping Hobbie
Baker candidate, David Emma, twice in the second from point
blank range.
The game came down to the third period, when the Eagles scored
twice and held the Huskies scoreless to advance to next Monday's
Beanpot Finals. BC freshman fourth-line center Jack Callahan
got the game winner, a power-play goal at 10:40 when he jammed
in the loose puck in a scramble in the crease. The insurance
goal came at 18:03 when BC's Bill Guerin broke out with Emma on
a two-on-one. Guerin fed a 30-foot pass to Emma on the left
wing who wasted little time wristing the puck into an open left
side of the net. Emma, who had a goal and an assist, is now
BC's all-time scoring leader with 224 career points.
NU stunned the heavily favored Eagles by going up 2 - 0.
Sebastien Laplante initiated the scoring at 6:43 of the second
when he sped in close on Gallupo and sank a neat backhander.
Then Rob Kenny made it 2 - 0 at 7:07 when he netted a 20-footer
thru the five-hole. BC's Matt Glennon answered at 8:53. NU went
back on top by 2 when Matt Saunders scored from 15 feet to make
in 3 - 1. Marc Beran scored for BC on the power-play at 15:34.
Beran tipped in a rising shot from the point that Cole had no
chance at stopping. The Eagles then tied it at 3 apiece with
a goal from Sean Farley at the 18:30 mark.
BC just had too much firepower for the struggling Huskies. Three
goals isn't going to beat the explosive Eagles very often, although
Tom Cole did his best to try and prove me wrong.
