It may be a bit early in the year, but if one goes north one can see
A)  albany - saratoga speedway (good stock car racing)
B)  historic saratoga springs (pretty town and horse racing)
C)  lake george - tourist mecca (or at least thats what we were told
    when our summer camp went there some 40 years ago)
 
Also, Bennington, Vt is not too far to the east, and is a reasonable
place to visit.  I don't know if it is still there, but the four
chimneys is an outstanding restaurant for lunch.
