Greetings, salutations, and welcome back to another emotionally sincere, scientifically accurate, eternally useful, occasionally goofy edition of the High Demand Hold Digest - your source for everything old, new, borrowed, and blue that our beloved users want.
If you knew nothing else about this world, this context, or this moment in time save for what is listed on the High Demand Hold list, you'd know something was amiss. The publishing industry is mired in delays and clogged distribution lines for physical books. Who would have thought that would be possible near the end of the first quarter of the 21st century? The film industry has all but gone silent in its releases of hot new items and/or Awards season bait, so much so that this year "Bill & Ted Face the Music"
may sweep all the major and minor Academy Awards. Hey - stranger things have happened.
But through the sea of changes and obstacles, the library still exists in all of its glorious forms. As many of us learned through our re-openings after an extended exodus from the stacks, people want, need, and love their library.
So give yourself two pats on the back - you have made it to the start of the 4th quarter of 2020 (no small feat in itself), and libraries are still operational. If nothing else, bask in that glory.
And now, for something new!
The high demand list is cool, but it represents a tiny sliver of the overall transactions that occur on a daily basis in Maine libraries. So I thought I'd start telling you a bit more about that.
In September 2020, there were 140,418 checkouts in the entirety of the Minerva system. These checkouts included 104,043 circs of books, 16,350 circs movies and TV series, 6,340 circs of graphic novels, 4,213 circs of audiobooks, and 880 circs of music CDs. Compared to September 2019, overall checkouts were down 43.50%, but from August (traditionally one of the highest circulation months during "normal" times), overall circulation increased 9.9% (an increase of 12,630 checkouts). Every month since
COVID-19 closures have seen an increase in use from the previous month. Not too shabby for an institution that, according to popular wisdom, was doomed to fail in 1997.
So to go over the fine print of this list, below is a list of the most requested items in the Minerva system where there are at least twice as many holds as there are items in the system. So while something like "Too Much and Never Enough" by Mary Trump still has 86 holds on it, there are 61 copies in the system so it does not make the list. Meanwhile, Nicholas Cage putting on an over-the-top performance in an H.P. Lovecraft adaptation of "Color Out of Space" has only one Blu-ray copy, but two holds, it makes the list.
