Excerpts from the Boston Globe, Jan. 15, 1994
by Jim Greenidge

Perennial ECAC power Harvard was tied by unheralded Vermont last
night, and it was the Crimson...who considered themselves lucky.

...Vermont, which had won its last 3 outings and 6 of its
last 7, stood toe to toe against Harvard, which boasted a 4-game
winning string.

...Vermont, which opened the season with 4 one-goal losses,
was only behind once, wh Harvard senior wing Brian Farrell scored
his second goal of the game on a power play...when he skated out of
the left corner and powered a shot past Vermont rookie netminder
Tim Thomas.

...In the 5-minute OT, Vermont had the better chances. Its
top scorer, freshman center Eric Perrin, came in alone against Harvard
goalie Tripp Tracy with 40 seconds remaining, but his shot went high.
Vermont had another golden chance with 1:40 left in OT when Mike
Larkin hit a streaking Rob Pattison, who lost his balance.

"They certainly came to play and we didn't skate well as a
team," said Harvard coach Ronn Tomassoni. "We struggled with a lot
of our decisions, but Vermont deserves a lot of credit for that."

About the only shining light for Harvard was Farrell, who
scored his team's last two goals and assisted on the first. Tomassoni
knew he needed Farrell's spark, so the coach double-shifted him
in the third. "I wanted him out there for the important face-offs,"
Tomassoni said.

"It was a tough night to take off a game," said Farrell, who
now has 15 goals and 23 points. "When we don't have it like tonight,
our talent's sometimes enough that we can scrape by with a win, but
this one feels like a loss. It was just a bad night."

..."As we went along, we developed more and more confidence,"
said rmont coach Mike Gilligan. "In the first 10 minutes, we were
so nervous we couldn't hit someone 4 feet away with a pass. Harvard
could have scored a few during that stretch. Our guys have matured
in recent times, and we're a team that has 4 or 5 freshmen playing
important roles, including our goalie. He's played better than I
expected, like a veteran."
