From Charley Walters' column in the 6/14/96 St. Paul Pioneer Press:

* Former Gopher Brian Bonin was named USA Hockey's College Player of the
Year at the organization's annual congress in Colorado Springs, Colo., the
other day. Ex-Gopher Neal Broten of the New Jersey Devils received the
distinguished achievement award.

* The Minnesota Daily reports that the Gophers have signed Cory Miller
(article below with more details). The Daily doesn't mention it, but I'm
almost certain this is the younger brother of Jason Miller, a Gopher center
from 1987-1991. So Cory joins Casey Hankinson, Ryan Trebil, Jason and
Brent Godbout, Dan Hendrickson, (brothers who are/were Gophers) Dan Woog,
and Erik Rasmussen (Dads who were Gophers) in the Gopher Hockey "All in The
Family" Club.

The Gophers signed another hockey phenom from Bloomington on Wednesday.
Only this one is from Kennedy High School rather than Jefferson.

Forward Cory Miller, who graduated from Kennedy in 1994 and played one year
for the USHL's Rochester Mustangs, will join the Gophers this season.

Minnesota will have six players on its team this fall from Bloomington
Jefferson, but Miller will be the only player from Kennedy.

He had 50 points last season for the Mustangs with 21 goals and 29 assists.
Gophers assistant coach Mike Guentzel said Miller is considered one of the
best players in the junior leagues.

Miller led the USHL in scoring during the playoffs last season with 15
goals and 12 assists in only 22 post-season games.

Minnesota has signed a total of eight recruits so far during the
off-season, but lost 10 seniors from last year's squad.

Miller joins centers Dave Spehar and Rico Pagel, defensemen Ryan Trebil,
Ben Clymer and Mike Lyons and goaltender Eric Day as freshmen with the
Gophers next year.
{end quote. Hopefully some time this season the Daily will learn to spell
Erik Day's name correctly.}
