RPI, seeded 7th, also upset 2nd seeded Colgate in 1987 to make it to Boston
for the ECAC final four. They soundly beat Colgate in the first game (7-2
or something like that), were losing the second game by 4 goals or so when
Coach Addessa pulled the goalie for an extra skater for the last 10
minutes. Joe Crowley (I think that's his name) was the Colgate goalie and
he must have faced 10-15 shots on net in the last 10 minutes of the third
period. Colgate did not have a decent backup goalie to put in and trust to
hold on to the win. Crowley was tired going into the 10 minute minigame
and RPI scored two goals to win the minigame and the series. Talk about
good strategy. I was announcing that game and the strategy seemed so
preposterous, but it worked.

If RPI has playoff upset magic in their blood, they are going to need it in
Burlington. I simply can't imagine being an away goalie at Vermont's rink
with 2000+ hungry, screaming, playoff crazy Vermont students sitting behind
me for two out of three periods. Good luck Mike Tamburro and don't forget
your earplugs.
