1. Freshman defenseman Jon Gaskins injured his left knee in MSU's 4-1 win over
Western Michigan and is expected to be out the rest of the year. With
Gaskins' injury and Chris Sullivan's one-game suspension, the Spartans only
dressed 5 defensemen for Saturday's 7-1 loss in Detroit against Michigan.
(They could have dressed 10, it didn't make much difference.) Sullivan
should be in the lineup for Friday's final home game against Notre Dame,
along with Brian Crane and Matt Albers.
2. While the Spartans swept Western Michigan this season, the Spartans were
swept during the regular season by Michigan for the first time since the
1963-64 regular season, 31 years ago. If that season sounds familiar to
some, it should. If memory serves correctly, it was the last year that
the Wolverines won the NCAA title.
3. The Spartan offense, which had put up 7 goals in seven different conference
games this season, has been ice cold through the month of February. In
amassing a 1-4-1 record since the shortest month of the year began (man,
it doesn't seem to be the SHORTEST month), the Spartans have scored only
13 goals while giving up 20, for an average of 2.17 goals per game. Even
worse is the fact that most of the games in February for MSU have been at
Munn Ice Arena, where before the month began, the Spartans had lost only
once (to UAF on 11/20/94). MSU is 1-3 at Munn in February.
