As Bill Fenwick reported, the ECAC div 3 East/West quarterfinals were
the games to watch Tuesday night. Every ECAC III East game was
decided by one goal. Three of the games went into overtime:
     #1 Middlebury 4, #8 Bowdoin 3 (OT)
     #2 Babson 3, #7 AIC 2 (OT)
     #3 Salem St. 8, #6 UConn 7 (OT)

The fourth game:
     #5 Williams 3, #4 UMass-Boston 2
was decided late in the third period. This game wanted to go into OT,
but Williams scored with just 40 seconds left in regulation! Sorry,
but I don't have any more details.

I just received more details of the Bowdoin/Middlebury game from Matt
Schechter (Thanks, Matt!) that I thought I'd pass along.

Middlebury Panthers 1 0 2 1 - 4
Bowdoin Polar Bears 0 1 2 0 - 3

The first penalty of the game was called 8 seconds into the first
period (!) on Bowdoin's Thomas Johanssen. Over 20 penalties were
called in the game, many of them questionable. Bowdoin managed to
prevent Middlebury's power play from scoring all night, including
killing off a 5 min. spearing major and DQ handed out to the Polar
Bears' Peter Kravchuk halfway through the first period.

Middlebury opened the scoring with 59 seconds left in the first on the
rebound from a shot taken by Kent Hughs. [Bowdoin's goalies have a
tendency to give lots of dangerous rebounds.] Brad Chin evened the
score on a backhand shot at 15:39 of the second. The Panthers came
out strong in the third period, scoring scoring two goals in the first
four minutes including a shorthanded effort by Scott Hill. Bowdoin
closed to within one when Jeff Wood put in Brad Chin's rebound after
Steve Kashin won the faceoff at 12:30. The Polar Bears then tied the
game three minutes later when a shot deflected off of a Middlebury
skate and went into the goal. Brad Jenkins, who never touched the
puck, got credit for the goal. Bowdoin started the overtime period
quickly, taking three quick shots on Brett Truchon and almost acquired
the upset. Truchon held fast and Middlebury won the game at 1:10 of OT.
