Some Division III scores from last weekend:

Friday, 12/7:
Plattsburgh State 15, Binghamton State 1
Oswego State 9, Geneseo State 6
     RIT 7, Canisius 5
     Fredonia State 5, Hobart 1
     Wisconsin-Stevens Point 3, Mercyhurst 1

Saturday, 12/8:
     Suffolk 7, Trinity (CT) 3
Potsdam State 13, Binghamton State 3
     Elmira 8, Brockport State 1

Here are the standings for the ECAC West, a Division III league (although
they and the ECAC East are sometimes referred to as "Division II"). These
are as up-to-date as I could get them -- there are several Saturday night
games missing. Anyway...

St. Bonaventure 0 9 1 1 0 9 1 1

In Elmira's 8-1 thrashing of Brockport State Saturday, Elmira had a 58-28
advantage in shots on goal, including a 29-8 advantage in the third period.
The Elmira Soaring Eagles look like a solid bet to make the Division III
playoffs, and though it's probably too early to talk about this, they might
even take the Division III championship. Linemates Joey Spinelli and Bernie
Cassell are 1-2 in scoring in the ECAC West, and freshman goalie Dave
Laudato has a .925 save percentage and leads the ECAC West (and East) with a
2.14 goals-against average.

Incidentally, the "State" schools in the ECAC West (except maybe for
Cortland) are members of the SUNY Athletic Conference, and the team with the
best record in that conference receives an automatic bid to the NCAA
Division III tournament. I think this is how Plattsburgh got a bid last
year despite finishing sixth in the ECAC West.

And yes, Keith, it is true -- Binghamton State (or SUNY-Binghamton) defeated
St. Bonaventure last Wednesday night, 6-4, and ended their losing streak at
58 games. This was probably the longest losing streak ever by an NCAA
hockey team at any level, although the NCAA apparently does not keep track.
Binghamton's win was its first ever as a varsity squad (the team attained
varsity status at the beginning of the 1988-89 season). Binghamton built a
5-1 lead in the second period, then held off the fast-closing Bonnies for
the victory. A lengthy celebration on the ice by players and fans alike
followed the game.

"But weightlifting misses the whole point. It amazes me that no one has ever
figured this out. A man can make any part of his body HUGE -- except one.
And that, by contrast, looks smaller."
