BRENT PETERSON HONORED AS MOST VALUABLE PLAYER AT AWARDS BANQUET
      MTU Captain Set Standard for '94-95 Club
 
        Houghton, Mich. -- Senior left wing Brent Peterson (Thunder Bay, Ont.),
who led the Huskies in goals with 20 and was second on the team overall in
points with 36, was honored with the Merv Youngs Award as the Michigan Tech
hockey team's Most Valuable Player Friday evening at the annual Blueline
Club Awards Banquet. The event was held in the Memorial Union Ballroom on
the MTU campus.
        Peterson, who closed out his career in a sixth-place tie on MTU's all-time
goal scoring chart with 80, also received the Hard Hat/Lunch Bucket and
Harold Meese Sportsmanship Awards.
        Newcomer Andre Savage (Ottawa, Ont.) was presented with the Norbert
Matovich Award as the team's Outstanding Freshman. Savage finished among
the top rookie scorers in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association this
past season and was fourth on the team with seven goals and 17 assists for
24 points. He notched two power play markers and one game-winning goal.
        Senior Jason Hanchuk (Nepean, Ont.) copped two awards, including the
Gitzen-Loutit Memorial Award as the team's Outstanding Defenseman and, for
the second straight season, the John MacInnes Slide Rule Award for
Scholastic Achievement. Hanchuk had his finest season in terms of goals
this past season with four and also gained 10 total points. One of his four
lamplighters was the game-winner, that coming in a 4-3 triumph at Ferris
State on Oct. 21. He owns a 3.62 cumulative grade point average in civil
engineering.
        Junior center Pat Mikesch (Hancock, Mich.) earned the Gary Crosby Memorial
Award as the team's leading scorer and also gained the George McCarthy
Performance Award for Scholastic and Athletic Achievement. Mikesch finished
with 15 goals and 28 assists, good for 43 total points. He had six power
play goals, two shorthanded markers, and three game-winning goals, and also
led the team in multiple-point games with 12. Mikesch owns a 3.04
cumulative grade point average in business administration.
        Freshman goaltender Pete Hamilton (Stillwater, Minn.) was the recipient of
the Elov Seger Memorial Award as Most Improved Player. Hamilton, who at the
start of the season was slated to spend the year adapting to the college
game, stepped in and played in three games during the season.
        Michigan Tech's five seniors -- defensemen Liam Garvey (Glenwood, Ill.)
and Jason Hanchuk (Nepean, Ont.), along with forwards Brent Peterson
(Thunder Bay, Ont.), Travis Seale (Mississauga, Ont.), and Randy Stevens
(Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.) -- were honored. The group combined for 61 wins
during their tenure, the most victories of any senior class since 1985-86.
