The staff and I are truly saddened that our wonderful Shane Billings is leaving us, to pursue his dreams (outside of libraryland)!

Shane has been an amazing asset, and an integral part of our awesome team.

The City of Rockland is searching for a Library Technician to join a terrific staff in providing exceptional service to the community of Rockland, Maine and to play an important role in an active, well supported public library.  We are looking for a friendly, welcoming, enthusiastic, team-oriented individual with excellent library and customer service skills, who works well with library users of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities, as well as an interest in participating in a wide-ranging variety of library services. They will possess a high level of internet, social networking, and computer skills, and enjoy teaching those to library patrons. Candidates must possess an interest in learning about and promoting the full range of services offered by the Library. This position provides an excellent opportunity to participate in a wide variety of services.

The Library Technician will help oversee a full range of reference desk services, answering both simple and complex reference questions using a variety of print, non-print and on-line reference sources; manages or assists with the interlibrary loan program; manages or assists with programming for adults; participates in community outreach; assists staff and patrons in maximizing the use of the Library's technological resources and may perform computer troubleshooting and maintenance; assists with, and/or provides backup to many other Library functions, including circulation, cataloging, ordering and maintaining supplies, and shelving.


POSITION SUMMARY:

The Library Technician has the following primary responsibilities:  Provides reference, research, and other assistance to library users in-person, via e-mail, social media, or by telephone, including interlibrary loan and local history; designs and delivers classes, programming, and tutoring in digital literacy to the public; contributes content to social networking and keeps up-to-date with emerging digital technologies; assists in developing content and maintaining the Library's website; designs or assists with outreach and community programming; assists staff and patrons in maximizing the use of the Library's digital resources; helps with troubleshooting and maintenance and helps develop policies and procedures to support use of the Library's technology and trains staff and patrons accordingly; participates in community outreach to promote Library resources and program initiatives; helps to collect, organize and prepare usage data and statistics for state, federal and City reports; may participate in collection development; works as needed on the Circulation Desk, including lending and returns, patron registration, explanation of Library policies, and assisting with patron requests; oversees facilities, operations and staff on assigned evening and weekend shifts.

QUALIFICATIONS NEEDED FOR POSITION:
Experience and Skill Requirements:  The following experience and skills are considered essential:

  *   At least two years of library experience, including direct service to the public, strongly preferred; similar experience would be considered.
  *   Customer service skills in working with customers of all ages.
  *   Ability to balance multifaceted job responsibilities in a busy environment.
  *   Good written and oral communication skills.
  *   Computer proficiency, along with the ability to assess and implement emerging technologies
  *   Ability and aptitude to teach technology skills to staff and patrons.
  *   Ability to work collaboratively or independently.
  *   Organizational skills along with high attention to detail.
  *   Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, associates, and the general public.
  *   Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications.
  *   Skill in typing and the ability to do data entry using a computer terminal.



Education Requirements:  The following education requirements are considered essential:

  *   A high school diploma or the equivalent required.  Post-secondary education in library science or a related field strongly desired. Masters in Library Science preferred.
  *   Considerable knowledge of library policies, procedures and practices, as well as print, non-print and online reference sources, and knowledge of contemporary cataloguing standards and practices, strongly preferred.
  *   Knowledge in utilizing emerging technologies preferred.


Full-time: 37.5 hours/week. Position requires some Saturday and evening hours.

Salary begins at $19.03/hour per collective bargaining agreement. This is a full-time, non-exempt position with a comprehensive benefits package, including medical insurance, a pension, and generous paid time off.
