Ralph Baer suggests using a 50-25-25 weighting in calculating the RPI index,
rather than the 25-50-25 that is currently in use. I whipped up a modified
version of my RPICH program to see what the results would look like, and
they are startling. They look very close to the way many of us would rate
the teams non-mathematically. The results of this experiment should
probably be brought to the attention of the Ice Hockey Committee and the
league offices.
The data set I used includes all of this season's games, with Maine's 3
early-season forfeits to Providence recorded as Maine losses. Results of
long-overtime games were not changed.
