Greetings:

January 11-17, 2009 is Maine Libraries Week. Congratulations to all who
work in school, academic. special and public libraries. The work you do is
an integral part of the lifeblood of your communities. There are several
ideas on how you can celebrate in your own library on the Maine State
Library's PR page . You can also print a copy of the proclamation signed by
Governor John E. Baldacci honoring Maine's libraries and the people who work
in them.

In August the Maine Sunday Telegram published A Literary Map of Maine, an
idea brought to Maine by Shirley Helfrich, district consultant for the
Southern Maine Library District/Maine State Library. Basing Maine’s map on
New York’s literary map of Manhattan, Shirley worked with the Portland
newspapers, several library and humanities groups in Maine and contributions
from readers around the state. Ideas of real or imagined places from Maine
children’s and adult books – fiction and factual poured in. An eight-member
panel narrowed the submitted titles to the final list of 50 places. The map
can be found by following this link
http://www.maine.gov/msl/libs/pr/index.htm#litmap.
A Literary Map of Maine can be used in a variety of ways. For instance, the
Rockport Public Library has fashioned their own celebration and reading
program based on this map. Rockport has generously given their permission
for other to use or adapt the brochure to meet their own library's needs.
The brochure is available in HTML if you don't have Publisher. Rockport
Public Library is known for providing outstanding readers' advisory
services. Congratulations to Molly Larson and Iris Eichanlaub.

Again, thanks to all of you who give your best in service to the people of
our state through your work in libraries.

Sincerely,
Valerie Osborne, Consultant
