PROVIDENCE, R.I. --The 10th-ranked Providence College Friars defeated the
Holy Cross Crusaders, 2-1, in college hockey action on Sunday, January 14
at PC's Schneider Arena.
Neither team was able to produce any offense in the opening 20
minutes of play as the team's entered the locker rooms tied 0-0. PC
outshot Holy Cross 8-3 in the period.
In the second period, the Crusaders struck first and took a 1-0
lead at the 8:28 mark. Holy Cross' Pat Rissmiller forced a turnover in
the neutral-zone and passed to Brandon Doria who broke in all alone on
PC's goaltender Boyd Ballard. Ballard stopped the initial shot but the
puck's momentum carried over the goal line.
At 13:36, PC's Drew Omicioli tied the game, scoring his seventh
goal of the season. Omicioli ripped a high slap shot from the top of the
slot that beat Holy Cross' goaltender Rick Massey.
PC's Marc Suderman netted the game-winning goal, a short-handed
tally, at 9:47 of the third period. Omicioli raced down the left side and
flipped the puck to Suderman who one-timed it past Massey, giving the
Friars a 2-1 lead.
Massey finished the game with 34 saves, including several
spectacular stops that kept the Friars from extending their lead in the
third period. Ballard earned the victory, his fifth of the
season, stopping 14 shots.
With the win, the Friars improved to 13-5-3 overall, while Holy
Cross fell to 5-13-1.
