The Army (9-12-2) hockey team notched its first win of the new century as the
Black Knights slayed the Iona (8-10-3) Gaels 5-3 before a standing room only
crowd at the Ice Hutch in Mt. Vernon, New York. The Cadets found themselves
in a 2-0 hole in the first seven minutes of play and then rallied to score
the next four goals to take 4-2 third period lead. Billy Griffith; Magic Mike
Fairman; Nathan Mayfield, Tim Fisher & Paul Gonzalez scored the Army goals.
Ryan Manotowich scored the first Iona goals and Rusty Ruhl cut the Knight
lead to 4-3 in the 3rd before Paul Gonzalez scored into the empty Iona net to
ice the win. Corey Winer notched his 5th win of the season making 34 saves
and Ben Brady made 33 saves for the Gaels as each team fired 37 shots in a
wild offensive game. Iona was celebrating hockey alumni night and the Ice
Hutch was filled to its 1500 capacity. **********************

*Souces close to the Army hockey program confirmed Army is leaving College
Hockey America to go into the MAAC conference next season. The MAAC post
season tourney will be played at Tate Rink which will certainly be the
premier hockey facility in the MAAC conference. Army should find the travel
demands of the new conference less taxing and it is a very competitive
grouping. Army already plays most of the MAAC teams and has posted a 7-3-1
record against MAAC opponents.
