Stated for the record its unanimous support of the half-shield for
intercollegiate competition. Instructed staff to inform the Committee on
Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports of its position and
inquire whether NCAA research moneys are available to study use of the
half-shield in select leagues such as the United States Hockey League (USHL)
and North American Professional Hockey League (NAPHL).

So, they haven't actually mandated its use until studies are done in TEST
leagues, as was done in Canada. In that study, one league wore the full, the
other the half. The outcome was the helmet wasn't worn correctly (snugness of
fit) with the half shield, which caused more serious head injuries
(concussions). With the half shield, the helmet can be tilted back and come
off easier, not to leave out, an increase in facial lacerations and dental
injuries. Getting your chin knocked can cause a concussion. So leaving that
area of the face unprotected increases your risk. The convincing evidence in
the Canadian study was that full shields are safer.

Peripheral vision will be improved and maybe players won't feel as
invincible. That also means having some regard for fellow players beyond a
win at any cost attitude.

Interference and diving have become pervasive. They aren't only
accepted, they're being coached.

That pervasive combative behavior is what necessitates helmets and shields in
the first place.
