MAINE 4, at BOSTON COLLEGE 2
Garth Snow earned the shutout in net for the Black Bears in a game that
really wasn't over until late in the third period. Patrice Tardif
scored power play goals in the first and second period to give Maine a
2-0 lead. Tardif's first came 3:31 into the game when Maine executed its
PP perfectly. Scott Pellerin's cross-ice pass to Jason Weinrich was
sent down to Cal Ingraham, who fed Tardif in the slot for the goal. BC
played tough defense as they did against Merrimack, and they also had a
few good scoring chances late in the period but Snow was equal to the task;
he also got some help from his defense.

At 13:56 of the 2nd, Ingraham and Weinrich worked along the boards and
prevented BC from clearing the puck. Tardif got the puck down low and
flipped a backhander over LaGrand's left shoulder to make it 2-0. In
the third, when BC again couldn't clear, Jean-Yves Roy got the puck off
the boards and fed Downey for a one-timer that just sneaked inside the
far post. 1:05 later, Roy banged in a rebound of Chris Imes' shot from
the blue line on the power play, Roy's 4th goal of the year. Jim Montgomery
also assisted. The power play was the difference in an otherwise closely
played game, as both teams had about 8 chances but Maine scored 3 times
to BC's none. I believe BC actually outshot Maine for the game.

at BOSTON UNIVERSITY 6, MINNESOTA-DULUTH 3
The perfect 4-0 Terriers got a hat trick from Mark Bavis and overcame a
3-2 deficit after two with two goals in the first minute of the third to
sweep the Bulldogs. David Sacco added three assists and Petteri Koskimaki
had 2-1--3. Duluth had scored the final two goals of the second period
(Derek Plante and Joe Biondi) to go up 3-2. UMD outshot BU 25-24 as UMD
netminder Jerome Butler made 18 saves. BU rested Scott Cashman and split
the dufflebag chores evenly between freshmen John McKersie (13 saves, 2
goals) and Derek Herlofsky (9 saves, 1 goal). UMD fell to 3-5-0.

ST LAWRENCE 10, at NORTHEASTERN 2
The Saints rebounded from Friday's lackluster performance at UMass-Lowell
with a demolition of the Huskies. Mike Lappin, likely ECAC Player of the
Week, had 4 goals and 2 assists to go with his 1-3--4 on Friday. SLU
scored 5 times in the first and added 3 in the second on the way to
building a 10-0 third period lead before NU got on the board. Lappin had
a hat trick in the first including two unassisted goals, and he scored
his fourth just 4:20 into the second period. The Saints outshot the
Huskies 42-27. Mike Taylor broke the shutout with 7:22 left in the game,
and Dino Grossi added a goal with 1:40 left for NU.

CLARKSON 5, at UMASS-LOWELL 2
Hugo Belanger scored Clarkson's first goal and assisted on Steve Dubinsky's
marker late in the first to help Clarkson build a 2-0 lead. Gerry Daley
cut the lead to 2-1 with 23 seconds left in the period, but Tuomainen
scored the eventual game-winner as the only goal of the second. Craig
Conroy sandwiched two goals around one by UML's Dan O'Connell in the
third. Chris Rogles made 28 saves for Clarkson and Mark Richards stopped
22 shots for the Chiefs as UML outshot the visitors, 30-27.

MISCELLANEOUS
Hockey East teams went 8-4-0 on the weekend against nonleague opponents.
League schedule gets into full swing this coming week with 7 HE games
scheduled. The only nonleague game is AIC at Merrimack. HE teams have
rolled up a 24-10-1 (.700) nonleague record thus far. New Hampshire leads
the way at 5-0-0. The Wildcats get their biggest test of the season this
weekend when they play at BC and host Northeastern. UNH is leading all HE
teams in both most average goals scored and fewest avg. goals allowed (tied
with Maine).

STILL IN THE BOOKS
It was close, but Merrimack coach Ron Anderson holds onto his spot in the NHL
record books along with the other members of the inaugural Washington Capitals
team. Anderson, a forward with the Caps that year, holds the distinction of
being a member of the team that lost the most consecutive games in NHL
history. The San Jose Sharks were threatening to wipe Anderson and friends
from the books, but the Sharks beat Edmonton Friday.
