   North Dakota won the title in 1987...at the end of the 86-87 season.  They
beat the Spartans at the Joe amidst a very hostile "home" crowd.  Minnesota took
3rd place over Harvard.

North Dakota also won in 1986, when Michigan State and Minnesota were at Joe
Louis
Arena, and RPI in 1985 for other winners from the majority entrants; more
prevalent
than the minority team winning is that a western team wins whenever there is an
uneven distribution (RPI being the only exception in five 3-1 Final Fours).
On
the other, I meant 1992 in Albany; that's when the four teams were all western
and
Lake State beat Wisconsin in the final.
