Last night's BU @ BC game at Conte Forum was similar to their previous two
contests. The major difference here was that BC found a way to control Drury,
Sylvia and Poti. For starters, BU was a assessed a violation of protocol
penalty at 00:00 of the first period. (The Terriers came onto the ice too
early!) BU scored two quick goals @2:49 (Vuori's 8th) and @ 3:26 (Emery's 1st)
- both were relatively soft. Jerry York immediately called his timeout and
Reasoner (BC's Captain) rallied the troops. BC came back with a vengeance and
allowed only e more shots from BU and Larocque (BU's goalie) was immense as BC
put on musch pressure [7 saves, many spectacular).
The second period was similar watching the grass grow for the first 9 minutes.
BC kept BU bottled up in BU's defensive zone, and BU played solid defense not
allowing the pesky, forechecking Eagles any real scoring opportunities.
However, the probable Rookie of the year in Hockey East, Brian Gionta scored
his 11th of the year beatin a slightly-screened Larocque through the 5-hole
{the shot was stoppable!). That brought the Eagles to life, and Mike Mottau
scored off the face off (7th goal) when the puck hit BU defenseman Kelleher's
boot and beat a startled Larocque.
The undermanned BU team never seriously threatened after that. The appeared
to tire in the 3rd period. The third period was all BC except for some
heroics by Drury and Sylvia (definitely, the heart and soul of this BU team;
plus the best goaltending tandem in college hockey.)
BC won the game on Bellefeuille's 9th goal (a power play @ 17:46 ) when he was
left all alone to the left of the goal and put a shot off Larocque's pads
which trickled through the 5-hole.
Jerry York put his checking line of Pierandri-Masters-Mulhern out against BU's
big boys Degerman-Drury-Sylvia-Vuori-Poti-Kellher when the faceoff was in BC's
end with less than a minute to play and Larocque on the bench). This was a
change from the last BU-BC contest whne York put his scorers out agains this
combination. It paid off, as Masters got the puck to Pierandri and he iced
BC's 2nd victory in 20 tries against BU with an empty netter.
