Geez, what a tempest in a teapot! Inasmuch as U.S. colleges go to such
extremes to attract Canadian hockey players, it doesn't seem too far out of
line to play "O Canada" along with the U.S. anthem before a game. Princeton
featured fourteen Canadians on their preseason roster -- I'd say that's a
sizable contingent, worthy of official note. Middlebury plays both; so does
Amherst College, with just a single Canadian on the Lord Jeff's roster. If
nothing else, it's a heck of a lot more "sing-able" than "The Star Spangled
Banner", though it's probably safe to say that not many Americans know all the
words. Of course, not too many of our super-blase, oh-so-laid-back students
(and 'way too many parents) are inclined to give full voice to their country's
song. Which brings up the question of why we play it (much less both) at
all.... but that's a subject for a different day.
My best wishes to one and all for a happy and prosperous 1998!
