In a game which started out as a repeat of last night, UND was able to
pull away in the second and put it away in the third in large part to a
hat trick by Dave Hoogstein.
UND scored the first goal 30 seconds into the first period. DU
came back to even the score thanks to a huge defensive breakdown by UND.
UND was able to answer back with Hoogstein's first goal. DU then had a
nice rising shot close to the blue line which went in the top shelf over
Kvalevog. IMO, this is the only goal that TK let in that was NOT due to
a defensive breakdown.
The second period of the game was BORING and uneventful for the
most part. It was marred by numerous stoppages (including a little girl
getting hit in the face with the puck and having to be rushed to the
hospital). During this period, UND somehow scored two goals. DU's
Mullin was playing out of his mind at times stopping everything that was
coming his way. The third goal from UND was a nice wrap-around shot
which seemed that seemed to surprise everyone by going in. If Mullin had
not been playing as well, the score could have been UND-7 DU-2 by this time.
The third period gave Hoogstein his hat trick along with an empty
netter in the closing minutes.

Comments: UND outshot DU 14 to 7 in the second. This period was almost
entirely UND's and at times appeared to be an extended power play.
Mullin: played a great game. With the exception of the first
and third goals (although he may have been screened on the first), he
played an outstanding game.
Kvalevog: a better game then last night. He still has not faced
a barrage of shots, but he made several key saves.
Power Plays: ACK! UND needs to work on this department.
Although, UND no longer has the guy with the puck standing behind the net
as precious seconds tick away. It was nice to see that eliminated from
the gameplan. However, a few of the powerplays were going so bad, that
everyone was assuming that both teams were at full strength.
Defense: One breakdown leads to a goal, but all in all no real
complaints. I think the shots ended up around 28-20 in UND's favor.
That would mean a series total of 52-42.
This is the first time that UND has swept DU since 1991.
