Two case histories.

A few years ago Eastern Michigan University changed its mascot from Hurons to
Eagles in spite of the objections of the Huron/Wyandotte people to the change.
The power structure at EMU basically told the Huron/Wyandotte, "Shut up, we
know when you're being oppressed even if you don't." The administration made
this change without consulting the student body, faculty and staff, or alumni.
Relations with the alumni haven't been the same since.

OTOH, Central Michigan University maintained their mascot, the Chippewas,
while altering the logo to delete the arrowhead they had used for several
years. Supposedly it was too war-like. CMU also put aside a portion of the
money made from the sale of licensed merchandise for scholarships for
residents at the local reservation.

The end result was that EMU is politically correct but didn't do one
meaningful thing for the Huron/Wyandotte. CMU is politically incorrect but
has taken measures that substantially benefit the local Chippewa people.

Time for another beer!
