I assume you're referring to harmless objects, in which case I agree.
My personal favorite is the streamers at the Palestra.
 
Note that this does not imply endorsement of objects or materials
harmfull to the participants or to the ice itself.  (i.e. don't try to
counter this with pennies, sugar, or salt)
