I figured that someone from the BU side would beat me to the punch (and I
added the rationale that I'd get more work done too...), so I didn't go out
of my way to get details when I missed goal announcements and such...

Conspicuous in his absense was Rich Brennan. Brennan looked bad at times in
the televised game against Maine, and did not dress because of his performance
in the Friday night game against Lowell. According to a BU assistant, "he's
taking too many stupid penalties."

Shootout (2-1 Lowell)

BU- Joubert (1st) and Grier (5th) are stopped. Prendergast, Thornton and
someone else went for BU (Drury? O'Sullivan? )
UML - Bullock scored, Sbrocca is stopped (couldn't get the puck to stop
bouncing), 4th line forward Riga scored, and freshman defenseman (!)Nicholishin
is stopped.
Observations
------------
* Bullock - Mike commented on Bullock's shootout goal being pretty, but now
teams will be ready for that one. I'd like to see it again on TV
replay, but my impression is that you can't take away the top shelf
backhander at the same time that you take away him pulling the puck
back to the blocker side and putting it in there. I'd be very
surprised if that was the only option with that move.
However, that's nothing close to his fanciest move. At Midnight
Madness they were doing shootouts for every player and when Bullock's
turn came he moved in, pulled the puck into his left skate, back to
the right skate, out to his forehand and into the net. The goalie had
*no* chance. Now it would take very big brass ones indeed to do a
showoff move like that in a real shootout...
Bullock did have a great game from the blueline in. But I think I see
what Crowder is getting at in terms of "some players being out of
shape" followed by a 4th line banishment of Bullock. I don't think
he's been quite as effective in neutral ice as he was last year. My
guess is that this was a bigger deal in the lost weekend against St.
Lawrence and Colgate when Bullock got shut out. And since Crowder has
guaranteed that within a couple weeks that won't be an issue, I'm
looking to see Bullock be as effective in neutral ice as he's been from
the blueline in.
* Bates - IMO Bates was the most impressive player for BU. His play
singlehandedly brought BU back in the third period. Looks like he's
added several pounds of muscle since his Medford (pronounced Meh-fuh)
HS days. He's not going to get Joubert numbers this year, but he'll
outplay many a first line. I like him with Drury.
* I like Donovan and Daw together on a line. At the end of last year I
predicted that Donovan would be one to step up and contribute big time.
I was disappointed that he was still a 3rd liner at the opening of the
season. But combining him with the resurgent Daw could be a good mix.
FWIW according to Crowder Donovan bulked up too much in the legs in
the offseason leading into his freshman year (last year). He was
squatting 495, which he felt was too much. He feels that Donovan has
got the speed back that he had when they first recruited him
(pre-bulking).
* According to reports I've heard, this was Lowell's highest scoring weekend
ever (14 goals). I don't know if giving up 16 is also a record. :-(
* This is a game that Lowell should have won in many respects. They threw away
a goal on Lindsey's failed clearing pass. And although I wasn't in
position to see, I've heard comments about a blown offsides call on one
of the late BU goals. On the other hand, BU disputed one of the Lowell
goals and Herlofsky looked awful on Bullock's slapshot for the tying
goal. Lowell had no right to expect that one.
* Teams should have some way of posting on the scoreboard the status of the
shootout. Almost everyone in my section thought that BU had been
stopped on all five of their attempts. I did see the ref signalling
one of the attempts as a goal, though, even though it looked like
Lindsey had the puck in his glove. I know the guy who was goal
judging at that end so I'll have to get the scoop from him.
* As bad as Herlofsky looked, there's no reason to believe that he can't get
out of his slump. Although a certain Lowell fan's heckling may have
messed with his head permanently. :-) Lowell, on the other hand, has
to hope that Lindsey (or Fillion or Fankhauser) has a better upside
than we've see so far. Where have you gone, Dwayne Roloson,
Mass-Lowell turns its lonely eyes to you...
