END OF REGULAR SEASON
QUARTERFINALS
Boston University receives a bye into the semifinals. Maine was declared
to have been suspended from the 1994 playoffs.
Quarterfinal format is best 2 of 3 series, no ties. The Merrimack-Lowell
series is scheduled for Thur 3/10, Fri 3/11, and Sat 3/12 if necessary.
To the best of my knowledge (not yet confirmed), the other two series
will be played starting Fri 3/11.
Matchups are:
#2 Mass Lowell (21-8-5) hosts #7 Merrimack (16-17-2)
SEASON SERIES: Won by UML, 2-0-1 (11 GF, 7 GA). UML has won 9 of the
last 10 meetings between the teams at Lowell.
LAST HE PLAYOFF MEETING: Never.
#3 New Hampshire (22-10-2) hosts #6 Boston College (15-14-5)
SEASON SERIES: Won by UNH, 2-1-1 (15 GF, 16 GA). UNH won both meetings
at UNH, 6-3 and 3-2.
LAST HE PLAYOFF MEETING: 1990 HE semifinals (BC 6, UNH 5 ot). That was
the only time the teams met in the HE playoffs.
#4 Northeastern (18-10-6) hosts #5 Providence (14-17-3)
SEASON SERIES: Won by NU, 1-0-2 (16 GF, 14 GA). The season's only
meeting at NU was a 6-6 tie.
LAST HE PLAYOFF MEETING: 1989 HE consolation (PC 3, NU 2). PC is 3-0
all-time against NU in HE playoff action.
All three matchups look like good ones, and I wouldn't put it past any
of the three road teams to pull an upset. Prime will beam NESN's
coverage of the HE quarterfinals around the nation. NESN will have one
of the games Friday on tape delay at 10 pm, and will show a game live
Saturday at 7 pm. If there is a game Sunday night, I believe NESN will
have that one too.
As of this moment, we will have coverage of Merrimack-Lowell Thursday
night on WCCM.
