I have read most of the NCAA 1990 rule book and have read several books on
hockey and its' rules for a class I took last quarter on Ice Hockey Coaching.
There really are a lot of very picky sub-rules to rules that can be quite
complicated. I am sure most refs miss a lot of calls because they lack the
requisite "eyes in the back of their heads".*:-) Most refs do a decent job,
however there are a few (in each league I am sure) who don't, and should be
"retired". It certainly is a thankless task. I found myself correcting a fan
next to me at last weekends game when the ref called a checking from behind
minor on one of the Gophers. The Gopher had indeed made the hit and incredibly
I saw it! I told my bench-mate that it was "a good call". Most of the time, I
don't see my team do anything wrong, and have been know to holler at the ref.
I think that each individual ref must have his/her idea as to what each penalty
actually (visually) looks like, and results in a wide disparity between refs.
Well, that's my 2 cents!!
