I got some e-mail about the injury, and thought it had gone to
the list. It hadn't, so here it is:

(From today's Wisconsin State Journal:)

The playing status of University of Wisconsin goaltender Duane Derksen is
in question after damage to an extensor tendon was discovered during
surgery to repair a deep laceration on his right hand late Friday night.

Derksen was cut along the lower inside part of the hand by a skate blade
early in the second period of a WCHA game with North Dakota at the Dane
     County Coliseum.

Subsequent surgery performed at University Hospital by Dr. William Engber,
a Madison hand specialist, revealed the tendon had been lacerated as well.

"It looked like we had gotten lucky," said Dr. Ben Graf, the UW team
physician, referring to a presurgery prognosis that Derksen had sustained
no damage to nerves or tendons. "It's not going to be as straightforward
     as we hoped."

Graf said Derksen would have to wear some sort of protection on the hand
for six to eight weeks. "Whether we can do that adequately and allow him
to compete is something we have to discuss," said Graf. "We haven't made
     any hard decisions."

On another injury front, freshman wing Jamie Spencer sustained a broken
right collarbone after being checked in the first period against UND.
Coach Jeff Sauer said Spencer is out for the season.
