MEN'S HOCKEY HOLDS OFF ST. LAWRENCE
Engineers move into seventh place in the ECAC

The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team got two goals from Carson Butterwick and 35 saves from Nathan Marsters to defeat St. Lawrence, 3-2, in an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) contest this evening at the Houston Field House in Troy, NY. The Engineers are now 11-10-4 overall and 5-7-3 in the league, moving up three spots to seventh in the ECAC. The Saints fall to 8-17-0 overall and 6-9-0 in the ECAC.

The game's scoring began at 14:46 of the first period when Butterwick, a junior, scored his eighth goal of the year on a rebound of a Matt Murley shot with the Engineers on a power play. Marc Cavosie, the ECAC's leading scorer, also earned an assist on the play. Murley, a senior from Troy, NY, now has a nine-game point scoring streak (7 goals, 11 assists) while Cavosie, a junior from Cohoes, NY, extended his personal point-scoring streak to ten games (7 goals, 10 assists). The Saints got a power play goal of their own late in the first stanza to tie the score. Senior Charlie Daniels gained possession of the puck after a face-off win by Sean Muir and slipped the puck past Marsters, a sophomore, at the 17:48 mark. For Daniels, the goal was his tenth of the season.

The Engineers jumped ahead, 3-1, with a pair of second period goals. Sophomore Conrad Barnes netted his first goal of the year when he broke in alone on Mike McKenna and slid the puck between the goaltender's legs. Cavosie and Blake Pickett set up Barnes' goal, which came at 3:23 of the period. Butterwick put the home team ahead by two goals with his second of the night when he deflected a Steve Munn shot past McKenna. Pickett earned his second assist of the game and second of the season on the play.

The Saints pulled to within one goal when Jim Lorentz potted his sixth of the year with just 1:48 remaining in the third period but St. Lawrence could pull no closer. Josh Anderson and Rich Peverly assisted on Lorentz's goal. McKenna stopped 29 saves in the loss.

Rensselaer is back in action on Saturday night when they host league foe Clarkson at 7pm at the Houston Field House in the
25th Annual Big Red Freakout!. The Saints will be at Union College, which hosted the Golden Knights, for a league game beginning at 7pm.
