Thanks, Ryan, for responding to my question about why Maine would re-hire
Walsh after a year's suspension. Those are good reasons, and it is likely
that Maine's AD considered them. The loss of a high profile coach,
especially on recruiting, is severe.
BUT, it is still hard to understand the wisdom of a school keeping a
coach that has brought so much disrepute upon a storied program. I've
never heard of a college keeping a coach on after these kind of NCAA
violations. I mean, UNLV tried to keep Tark, and Tark tried to stay, but
eventually he was forced out. I just see nothing but ill coming from
Maine's decision to retain, with a year's suspension, this coach. The
decision seems to exemplify the disarray in the Athletic Dept. at Maine,
and a lack of accountability. This (non)decision to keep Walsh speaks to
a lack of institutional control over the program, in my opinion.
PS--While I hate to compare anyone to Tarkanian, Walsh's complete
disregard for previous edicts of the school (by taking $$$ from a booster
after being told not to and denying it later) does imply to me that he
will not be chastened by the suspension and will continue to undercut
Maine's hockey program, even as he is recruiting great players and
schmoozing with tons of boosters.
