BU played their best game since the season opener at RPI, but
came up short in the scoring column, losing to Northeastern by
2 goals. It was the largest crowd to see BU play Northeastern
at Matthews Arena in ten years, as 4113 people attended the
game.

In the first period both teams came out strong. Northeastern
began to control play and Chris Kelleher took a penalty for
interference. BU did a good job of killing the penalty and
with only 10 seconds left Northeastern was caught with too many
men on the ice. BU played well on the powerplay, but Veisor
kept the game scoreless. Thirty seconds after the penalty had
expired BU went back on the powerplay, as Darryl MacNair was
called for tripping. BU again pressed on the powerplay, but
again Veisor stonewalled them.

At 10:12 NU went on their second powerplay when Shane Johnson
was called for holding. This time NU took advantage as
Francois Bouchard scored just 9 seconds later giving NU a 1-0
lead. On the ensuing center-ice face off Northeastern
controlled the puck and Tom Parlon made a pass to Scott
Campbell at the BU blueline. Campbell and Craig Carmody had a
2-on-1 against BU and Campbell made a nice pass to Carmody who
was at the right face-off circle. Carmody shot the puck past
Herlofsky into the net giving NU a 2-0 lead.

BU retook control of the game and outplayed Northeastern the
rest of the period, but could not get the puck past Veisor
until only a 1:44 remained in the period. Chris O'Sullivan was
in the left corner with two NU players and he managed to get
the puck to Steve Thornton. Thornton took the puck, skated to
the side of the net and put it into the far corner past
Veisor's stick.

The second period was again controlled by BU at even strength,
but the Terriers did have to weather 3 NU powerplays in the
middle of the period, including a 5x3 for 31 seconds. BU had 2
powerplay chances themselves, and although they set up and
controlled the puck, Veisor and the Huskies defense was able to
keep BU from scoring.

BU got another powerplay chance 29 seconds into the third
period, as Darryl MacNair was called for hooking. Again the
Terriers were able to set up and control the puck, but were
unable to score as they hit the post twice. A mini-brawl broke
out at 5:44 as the Huskies took exception to a BU hit moments
before. When order was restored both teams had received 2 sets
of matching coincidentials and play continued 5-on-5. BU
continued to press and control the play, but were unable to get
the tying goal. Jack pulled Herlofsky with 58 second (or so)
left and a face-off in the Northeastern zone, but BU was could
not keep the puck in the NU zone. The Huskies finally got an
empty net goal with 2 second left in the game as Jordan Shield
got the loose puck in the BU zone and fired it into the empty
net.

Random observations: BU looked much better than last weekend
against Lowell. Derek was solid in net, making a few key save
to keep BU in the game and the defense played well. Rich
Brennan was back in the line-up and he had a good game and took
no penalties. Kaj Linna also took no penalties as they both
settled down and played solid defense. In all the defense took
only 2 penalties in the game.

BU's short-handed play was much improved despite giving up a
powerplay goal. They did a good job of getting the puck and
clearing it out of the zone. They also did a very good job of
keeping NU from setting up in the BU zone. They also
controlled the puck in neutral ice and the NU zone for good
amounts of time while killing the penalties.

On the powerplay BU was unable to score, but the powerplay was
able to setup in the NU zone, control the puck, get a good shot
and regain control of the puck keeping it in the NU zone. They
also were able to maintain puck control in the NU zone for over
a minute straight on several powerplays.

Despite losing the game I think BU played an excellent game and
I am very encouraged by this. Tonight I think I saw the team
that was picked to win Hockey East in the pre-season.

Northeastern had flashes on offense, but it was the Huskies
goalie Mike Veisor who won the game for them. He had another
standout game against the Terriers at Matthews Arena. It was
almost two years to the day (11/14/1992) that Veisor stopped 41
of 42 shots and came within 8 seconds of shutting the Terriers
out as NU won 2-1.

Northeastern's defense also played a solid game as they kept BU
from putting even more shots on Veisor. They deflected quite a
few pucks with sticks, skates and bodies. They also kept BU
players from getting to many rebounds.

The officials called 15 penalties, 8 on BU and 9 on NU. There
were two sets on coincidentals (all called at the same time),
giving Northeastern 6 powerplays and BU 7. I missed who called
one penalty on BU. Rich Fowkes called 7 penalties, 3 on BU
and 4 on NU, while Jeff Bunyon called 6 penalties, 3 on each
team (including all four coincidentials). Two penalties were
called by both referees, one on BU and one on NU. One penalty
for too many men on the ice was called by linesman Chuck
Wynters on NU.
