One tie-breaker that I've seen used in a Metro Boston youth tournament was to
have a five-on-five overtime for 2 minutes, then four-on-four,
three-on-three, down to one-on-one ( not including the goalkeepers, who
always stay in the game). The game ends when a goal is scored (sudden death).
The game really opens up as the number of players decrease, and allows for
all kinds of strategy in terms of who's on the ice, etc.
