I condone what the students do at the Cornell hockey games at Lynah Rink. It
has been a tradition of cheering, reading newspapers during the opposing
teams starting line introduction and then wadding them up and throwing them
on the ice during the RED introduction, standing throughout the entire game,
Throwing fish on the ice BEFORE the start of the HARVARD game, and generally
raising the type of commotion that you would expect from a bunch of
teenagers. However the "STUDENT SECTION" is far away from either bench
(across the rink at one end) and having it here will not endanger the
players. This season, the referee announced that Cornell will be assessed a
2:00 penalty for fans (from either team) throwing things on the ice DURING
the game. It happened a few times during the season and once the fans got it
through their heads that it was detrimetal to the teams success, they
stopped that behavior.
What I don't understand is this: Why would you throw things on the ice that
could harm a player; coins, rocks, ball bearings, ice, bottles, and other
things? THIS kind of tradition has to stop. Wadded up newspaper is one
thing, a broken bottle is another. Any fan throwing anything on the ice
during the game should (and in our rink is) be thrown out of the stadium.
Any repeat offender should be barred for the season. No exceptions. As far
as cleanup, there is a cleanup crew to take care of the ice to make sure
that the surface is clean and not hazzardous to the players. What more can
we expect? Good clean hockey!
