Now that all the conference tournaments are out of the way, it's time to
announce the winners of the Pick the Post-Season Tournaments contests. For
Contest #1, in which the later rounds were weighted more than the earlier
ones, the overall winner is...
Iyer Venkatesan
who swamped the competition with a total of 227 points, 23 ahead of the
runner-up, the CHODR ratings. Iyer's incredible prognosticating ability, keen
college hockey acumen, and amazing grasp of the vagaries of tournament play
give us all an ideal to aspire to -- yeah, yeah, I think it was pure luck too,
but I wound up 78 points behind, so I have to be nice :-)
As for the individual conference winners...
Jennifer Iwen took the top spot in the ECAC with 46 points.
Iyer Venkatesan won a close race in Hockey East with a perfect 48 points.
Thomas Bednarek nudged out a number of runners-up in the CCHA with a score of
48 points.
In a man-vs-machine showdown (well, man-vs-mathematical-formula, anyway) in
the WCHA, Charlie Shub and the CHODR rating tied for first with 54 points
each, and Charlie won the first tiebreaker (championship game score
prediction), coming three points closer to the actual score than CHODR did.
Iyer Venkatesan, James O. Edwards, and CHODR all picked the MAAC perfectly to
finish in a three-way tie for the top spot with 44 points, and Iyer took the
honors with the closest predicted score in the first tiebreaker.
From last week's update, Andrew Christianson finished atop the CHA with a
score of 36 points.
Complete scoring results are below. Congratulations to all the winners, and
thanks again to all those who participated.
Tiebreaker notes: The first tiebreaker was the difference between your
predicted championship-game score and the actual score. Thus, if you picked
the score of the ECAC championship game (actually 3-1) to be 4-2, you would
get two points; if you picked 5-0, you would get three points; and if you
picked 2-1, you would get one point. Obviously, the lower point score the
better.
The second tiebreaker was the difference between your predicted total of goals
scored in the tournament and the actual number. Again, the lower the point
total the better.
As far as tiebreakers that were actually needed:
For the WCHA, the championship game score was 6-5.
For the MAAC, the championship game score was 6-5.
The USCHO prognosticators' numbers are included below, as are the "Higher
Seed" picks showing what would have happened if the higher seed for each game
had been picked to win.
