Russia won the 1993 World Cup. Canada could not keep up their
top play from the pool round and ended up taking fourth. Eric
Lindros dissappeared in the last three games with only one point
(correct me if I'm wrong). Sweden took second and the Czech Rep.
took the bronze.

 Russia 9 11 9 - 29 7*2min,1*5min

The game started out very well, with scoring chances for each team. Lindros
deked a Russian defenseman at the blue line and came in alone with Trefilov,
aimed for the 5-hole but Trefilov was there. Canada took the lead on a
power play, Manson's shot from the blue line was deflected by Corson in front
through Trefilov's 5-hole. Then, Canada had a 5on3 power play but failed to
score. Dmitri Yushkevich broke up a Canadian 3on1 counter attack, followed
his team mates on a Russian attack and could then score the 1-1 goal.
At the end of the period a Russian took a 5minute penalty, giving Canada a
 long power play.
In the beginning of the second period, Manson made it 2-1 on a slap shot,
and only 12 seconds later it was 3-1, Benning made a nice effort skating
in between the Russian defense and passing the puck to an open Corson.
The Canadians thought they had a comfortable lead, but from then on it was
all Russia. Titov made it 3-2 after Ranford made a mistake, the puck was
passed back to Titov from behind the goal to the near post. Astrachantsev
made it 3-3 on a delayed penalty call. Bykov scored 3-4 on a rebound, and
Khomutov made it 3-5 on a pp goal, after a Shendelev faked shot.
The Canadian got their hopes up again after an early third period goal.
Lindros one-timed the puck after a nice effort by MacIver.
But the Canadians couldn't keep up to the Russian's faster pace, and the
Canucks ran out of fuel as the Russians made it 4-6 and 4-7.

A well deserved and historic first WC gold for the Russians.

The Russians opened the game best and created the most chances. German Titov
skated in from the side, Soderstrom went down and made the save, but the
puck somehow deflected up in the air and flew all the way into the far corner
of the goal, fluke goal #1. The Russians continued playing good hockey,
Nikolishin and Karpov entered the Swedish zone, Nikolishin passed the puck
to Karpov, Nikolishin split the Swedish defense and headed towards goal,
Karpov with a pass back to Nikolishin, and Akerstrom was too late back
checking, and Nikloishin could just put the stick to the puck, 0-2.
Beautiful goal. Halfway through the period, Sweden finally started producing
some scoring chances. Bergqvist had a big one, and Nylander too, but the
puck didn't go Sweden's way. Sweden put good pressure on early in the second
period, but the Russians were to strike again. Arto Blomsten failed to
take the puck down with his glove, the puck came out to Khomutov who took
a swipe at it, the shot deflected on Blomsten's stick and no chance for
Tommy to save that one, 0-3 and fluke goal #2. After that, the Swedish team
lost their discipline totally, and started playing like crap, just attacking
on random instead of using tactical skill. The Russians just guarded the lead.
It took all the way until halfway in the third before Sweden scored. Trefilov
gave a rebound on a shot, and Mikael Andersson tried three times to put the
puck in on the rebound, the puck entered the crease and a Russian player tried
to cover the puck in there, but Mikale Renberg poked the puck (and the player)
into the goal, 1-3. After that, the Swedes started producing some quality
opportunities, but they were just a little too hot and couldn't put the
puck past a very well playing Trefilov in the Russian goal. Sweden pulled
the goalie, and Rundqvist had a good deflection on a Kennholt shot, but
 no more goals were scored.

Player of the game was for Russia goalie Andrei Trefilov, and for Sweden
 goalie Tommy Soderstrom.

Three most valuable players for each team were, Russia: Bykov, Khomutov and
Biakin. Sweden: Akerstrom, Peter Andersson and Dahlen.
