Subject: Rankings
The point totals do not necessarily tell us who are the stronger teams.
I use a simple formula to get a ranking using points, wins and goals.
The rank = 3 x win % + 2 x point % + goal %, where the win % is the
percentage of the total games ( 100 x wins/games), the point % is the
percentage of possible points ( 100 x points/(games x 3)), and the goal %
is the percentage of total goals the team scores (100 x goals/(for+against)).
This weeks ECAC table is then:
ECAC CRANK CRANK=3XWIN%+2XPT%+GOAL%
TEAM G W L D P F A D PP WP GP CRANK
1 RPI 2 2 0 0 4 14 6 8 100.00 100.00 70.00 570.00
2 BROWN 3 3 0 0 6 13 8 5 100.00 100.00 61.90 561.90
3 UNION 2 1 0 1 3 9 5 4 75.00 50.00 64.29 364.29
4 CORNELL 2 1 0 1 3 8 7 1 75.00 50.00 53.33 353.33
5 DARTM 2 1 0 1 3 8 7 1 75.00 50.00 53.33 353.33
6 YALE 2 1 1 0 2 6 4 2 50.00 50.00 60.00 310.00
7 VERMONT 2 1 1 0 2 4 6 -2 50.00 50.00 40.00 290.00
8 HARVARD 3 1 2 0 2 11 11 0 33.33 33.33 50.00 216.67
9 CLARKS 2 0 1 1 1 4 10 -6 25.00 0.00 28.57 78.57
10 PRINCE 2 0 2 0 0 8 11 -3 0.00 0.00 42.11 42.11
11 SLU 2 0 2 0 0 7 13 -6 0.00 0.00 35.00 35.00
12 COLGATE 2 0 2 0 0 3 7 -4 0.00 0.00 30.00 30.00
AVERAGE 0 48.61 40.28 49.04 267.10
This helps to sort out teams with the same number of points, and also
shows which teams are stronger. Not very sophisticated, but easy and
useful.
