After reading Richard Hungerford's summary I remain confused about one point. Why is Bates' team a club team yet they play an ECAC Alliance schedule? By playing such a schedule (the same as 15 varsity teams) there would appear to be no difference except in name from being styled a club team rather than a varsity team. Is this being done simply to avoid upgrading their mens team to a varsity team? They are the only NESCAC school not playing mens varsity hockey despite having an excellent new rink. I am mystified.
