According to an article at

the 12 athletic directors of the ECAC approved a change to the
league's playoff structure. Under the new system, all 12 teams will
make the postseason, with the 5th to 8th place teams hosting the 9th
to 12th place teams in best-of-three playoff series. The following
weekend, the four winners of those series, re-seeded, would travel to
face the top four finishers in best-of-three quarterfinal series. The
winners of those would advance to the ECAC championships at Lake Placid.

Because the plan involves an extra week of playoffs, it is slated to
take effect the season after next, when the start of the NCAA
tournament is moved back a week.
The plan must still be approved by the (non-athletic) Policy Committee
of the ECAC.
