Good morning, and pleasant predecessor to the weekend,

I’ve had some calls and emails and semaphores and just a bit of Morse code (no singing telegrams yet) sent my way regarding problems with Android devices reading e-books in the past week or so. I sent an email to address this matter a week ago, but I’m reminded that subject lines that look like “Fw: blahblahblah” don’t retain a grip on the short-term memory like LOTS OF SHOUTY CAPITALS.

Anyway: if you or an Android user you love is suffering from a sudden inability to read e-books on their Android or Kindle Fire device, they may be suffering from a condition known as Cloudlibrary Requires Update* to Device (CRUD). Those who suffer from CRUD should immediately update their cloudLibrary app to the newest version. As always, a clean installation is recommended whenever possible, so be sure to uninstall first.

Kindle Fire users should follow the instructions presented here: https://www.yourcloudlibrary.com/kindle-fire-installation/<https://nam03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.yourcloudlibrary.com%2Fkindle-fire-installation%2F&data=02%7C01%7CJared.Leadbetter%40maine.gov%7Cf41bb345c55d485d15ea08d79923ebb8%7C413fa8ab207d4b629bcdea1a8f2f864e%7C0%7C0%7C637146252482123427&sdata=%2Fr9WfGxVIvN8FC8g%2FvSuMjct62ES2mXTRL73hZDhWN8%3D&reserved=0>

Why the * after update? Some CRUD sufferers may find that their preferred device is unable to update to the newest version of the app. If they wish to continue using cloudLibrary to read e-books, they will need to UPGRADE their device. This is for users of Android OS and Kindle OS earlier than 5.0.

N.B.: Audiobooks are not impacted by this update, and Apple devices are AOK.

If you have more questions about CRUD, please consult with… well, me.

Subject: FW: cloudLibrary Communication -- Android App 4.6.26 Release and Important Upgrade Information

Good morning, all,

This is regarding an imminent update to the cloudLibrary service. The short of it is:

-Users of cloudLibrary with Android devices (including Kindle Fires) are strongly advised to update to the latest version. Not doing so will make me sad, and also create a problematic e-book reading experience. Kindle Fire users should follow the instructions presented on the cloudLibrary website (https://www.yourcloudlibrary.com/kindle-fire-installation/<https://nam03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.yourcloudlibrary.com%2Fkindle-fire-installation%2F&data=02%7C01%7CJared.Leadbetter%40maine.gov%7Cf41bb345c55d485d15ea08d79923ebb8%7C413fa8ab207d4b629bcdea1a8f2f864e%7C0%7C0%7C637146252482123427&sdata=%2Fr9WfGxVIvN8FC8g%2FvSuMjct62ES2mXTRL73hZDhWN8%3D&reserved=0>) while users of other Android devices should update as normal.

-SOME devices will be incompatible (for reading e-books) with this update. Audiobooks will still be available on their devices, but e-book readers will need to invest in a newer device. Devices impacted by this are those below Android 5.0, or below Fire OS 5.0 (for Amazon devices).

-We are sorry for any frustration or confusion this generates for your patrons!

Have further questions? Let me know.

Summary
We are pleased to announce the release of cloudLibrary for Android version 4.6.26. This release accommodates an upcoming and mandatory server update by Adobe which is due to be performed in the coming week. In order to ensure a seamless eBook reading experience, Android patrons should update immediately to the latest version. We suggest using the messaging tool in CAT to announce the upgrade to your patrons.

Patrons using Amazon Fire devices with Fire OS version 5 or higher should upgrade to the new app version found here: https://www.yourcloudlibrary.com/kindle-fire-installation/<https://nam03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.yourcloudlibrary.com%2Fkindle-fire-installation%2F&data=02%7C01%7CJared.Leadbetter%40maine.gov%7Cf41bb345c55d485d15ea08d79923ebb8%7C413fa8ab207d4b629bcdea1a8f2f864e%7C0%7C0%7C637146252482123427&sdata=%2Fr9WfGxVIvN8FC8g%2FvSuMjct62ES2mXTRL73hZDhWN8%3D&reserved=0>

The following devices are not compatible with the latest cloudLibrary Android release and will require a newer device in order to continue enjoying eBooks. Audiobooks will still work on these devices if upgraded to cloudLibrary version 4.6.26:

  * Devices below Android 5.0 (released Dec. 2014)

  * Amazon Fire devices below Fire OS version 5 that use cloudLibrary versions 3.6 to 3.8
