HOCKEY FALLS TO UMASS BOSTON, 5-4

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team saw a late rally fall short and lost to UMass Boston, 5-4, in the Corsairs' 2011-12 home opener at the Hetland Ice Arena Saturday.

Senior forward Mike Owens (South Boston, MA/Boston Jr. Bulldogs) scored a pair of goals to cut a 5-2 UMass Boston lead to a single goal with 10:34 remaining.

Owens fired home a shot right off a face-off in the Beacon zone with 23 seconds left in the second period to make it 5-3, then re-directed home a pass from junior forward Phil Bronner (Wilbraham, MA/Springfield Jr. Falcons-EJHL) at 9:26 of the third period to make it 5-4. However, the Corsairs could come no closer, despite pulling junior goaltender Ryan Williams (Milton, ON/Huntsville Otters-OPJHL)

The Beacons grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first period. Sophomore forward Travis Daniel (North Brunswick, NJ/New Jersey Rockets-AJHL) opened the scoring with a power play goal at the 38 second mark, five seconds after UMD senior forward Rob Dudley (Douglas, MA/Middlesex School) had been penalized for hooking. Junior defenseman Rob Florentino (West Roxbury, MA/South Shore Kings (EJHL) made it 2-0 with another power play goal at 8:13, and senior forward Kyle Tejchma (Fruitport, MI/Walpole Express-AJHL) made it 3-0 when he scored at 19:18 of the first period.

Freshman forward Cody Gut (Chichester, NH/Boston Jr. Bulldogs (AtJHL) made it 3-1 when he scored his first collegiate goal at 4:40 of the second period, flipping home the rebound of a shot by junior forward William Colclough (Naples, Fl/Peoria Mustangs (CSHL). Bronner made it 3-2 when he scored on Dudley’s rebound at 8:52, but senior forward Anthony Fitti (Havertown, PA/Philadelphia Little Flyers-AJHL) made it4-2 when he won the ensuing center ice face-off and scored on a breakaway six seconds later. Freshman forward Faiz Khan (Newhall, CA/Prince George Spruce Kings-BCHL) made it 5-3 when he scored a power play goal for UMB at the 19:21 mark.

“I thought we battled back, especially after being down, 3-0, although it was disappointing that we lost the game,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “I thought Mike Owens played a great game, (freshman defenseman) Steve Ginand (Milford, MA/Northern Cyclones-AtJHL) played well on defense, and we just played the type of game that we need to be able to play.”
The Beacons outshot the Corsairs, 37-36. Williams made 22 saves in the final two periods after relieving sophomore Ben Vandervies (Hanna, AB/Golden Rockets-KJHL), who made 10 saves in the first period. Freshman Alex Scola (Exeter, NH/Woodstock Slammers-MJHL) made 32 saves for UMass Boston UMass Dartmouth scored on one of five power play opportunities while giving up three power play goals on four chances, albeit the chance they successfully killed off was a five-minute major.
The Corsairs dropped to 1-1-0 with the defeat, while the Beacons improved to 1-2-0 with the victory. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Worcester State Tuesday evening. UMass Boston will visit Skidmore next Friday.
