HOCKEY DEFEATS BECKER, 6-2
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team scored three goals during a span of just over four minutes in the second period and went on to defeat visiting Becker, 6-2, in their 2010-2011 home opener at the Hetland Arena in New Bedford Thursday.
The Corsairs, who led 2-1 after the first period, tripled their lead when they scored twice within 2:02 in the second period. Sophomore forward Dave McDonald (Wakefield, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors-EJHL) made it 3-1 when he took a pass from sophomore forward Phil Bronner (Wilbraham, MA/Springfield Jr. Falcons-EJHL) in the slot and fired a shot past BC starting goaltender Tom Natoli (So. Suffern, NY/Philadelphia Jr. Flyers) at 8:25. Junior forward Rob Dudley (Douglas, MA/Middlesex School) made it 4-2 when he flipped home the rebound of a shot by junior forward Mike Owens (South Boston, MA/Boston Jr. Bulldogs) at 10:27. Becker freshman forward Korby Anderson (Owatonna, MN/Rochester Ice Hawks) made it 4-2 when he poked in a loose puck from right in front of the net at 11:34, but UMD went back up by three goals when senior forward Jason Stahl (Londonderry, NH/Valley JR Warriors-EJHL) deflected home a feed from senior forward Joe Hill (Newburyport, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors-EJHL) at 12:28.
The Corsairs broke on top in the first period. Hill won an offensive zone face-off and fed senior forward Todd Bartelson (Pepperell, MA-UMass Lowell) for the game’s first goal at 4:32. Owens stole the puck and broke away for a shorthanded goal at 8:35. UMD took four penalties in the opening period, and went down two men for 50 seconds. They killed off Becker’s first three penalties, but junior defenseman Jeremy Norducci (Apex, NC/Queen City Steam) scored a power play goal on a screen shot from the point at 19:14 of the first period.
Freshman forward Ryan Ruddock (Amesbury, MA/Eastern Kodiaks) tipped in a shot by sophomore forward Dan Dempsey (Norwell, MA/Lebanon Valley College) at 9:33 of the third period to complete the scoring.
“I thought for the first game of the season, we played well,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “We played well in the first period to go up 2-0. I thought we were out of the woods when we killed the five on three power play, and then we got another penalty. We didn’t play well in the first half of the second period. In the third period, we were just looking to play good, sound, fundamental hockey. We won all three periods and we won the game, and I thought it was a good start.”

The Corsairs out shot the Hawks, 42-28. Senior goaltender Collin Tracy (Medford, MA/Medford HS) made 26 saves for UMass Dartmouth, while Natoli and freshman Shaun Millerick (Hampton, NH/Berwick Academy) combined to make 36 stops for Becker.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 1-0-0 with the victory, while Becker fell to 1-2-1 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Suffolk Saturday evening. The Hawks will host Nichols next Wednesday.
