GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. --The Wisconsin Badgers defeated the Providence College
Friars, 4-1, in the first game of the NCAA West Regional on Saturday, March
24 at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich.
        Making their ninth appearance in the NCAA Tournament and their first since
1996, the Providence College Friars fell to 9-15 all-time in NCAA Tournament
action.
        The Badgers jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead at 1:40 of the first period when
Matt Hussey wristed in a shot from the left face-off circle that beat Friar
goaltender Nolan Schaefer to the short side for the only goal of the period.
        Wisconsin increased its lead to 2-0 on a power play when Dany Heatley beat
the Friar defense down low and fired a shot past Schaefer at the 4:07 mark.
The Badgers struck again at the 11:17 mark when Matt Murray fired a low shot
through a screen that found the back of the net.  Providence got on the
scoreboard at the 18:41 mark of the second period when Adam Lee redirected a
pass by Wisconsin netminder Graham Melanson.
        Providence came out strong in the third period, but the Badgers added and
insurance goal by Andy Wheeler at 13:52 of the third period to seal the win.
        With the win, Wisconsin improved to 22-14-4, while Providence finished the
season at 22-13-5.
        Wisconsin will play Michigan State at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 25 at Van
Andel Arena in the NCAA West Regional.
