Including the previous season in any ranking is rather silly. That certainly
has nothing to do with how a team is now. It assumes that a team never
changes its relative position. The fact that RPI (for example) was good
last year doesn't mean that they're exempt from stinking now. And, OTOH,
the fact that Cornell was lousy last year doesn't mean they can't be good
now, and they shouldn't be held back in a rating because they were lousy
last year.
 
The "problem" with the rankings is merely that the college season hasn't
made it to the "what you see is what you get" state. Somewhere between 1/3
and 1/2 of the way through teams will likely have found their level for
the year.
