BEAVERS, JACKETS, POINTERS SWEEP TO OPEN SEASON
 
Last Week:  Bemidji State, Superior and Stevens Point each swept NCHA
series to open the 1994-95 season while River Falls and St. Norbert split
non-conference contests.
 
This Week:  Teams take an early season break from NCHA play as every team
competes in non-conference play, except for Stevens Point, who is idle.
 
Bemidji State 6, St. Scholastica 2

Friday:  The Beavers got three first period goals to send them on their
way.  After CSS's Sean Storie opened the scoring, BSU got three
unanswered goals from Omer Belisle, Jeff Sobb and Craig McKechney to take
a 3-1 lead after one.  Craig Matatall made it 4-1 with the lone second
period score and then Sobb countered again 10 secons into the third
period.  Pat Hughes got Scholastica back on the board before Matatall got
his second goal of the night for the final.  Robin Cook and Mike Beaton
combined for 19 saves in net for the Beavers while Andy Karsnia had 56
saves in a losing effort.
 
Saturday:  Omer Belisle scored a hat trick and added to assists while
Craig Matatall and Eric Fulton each had a pair of goals as the Beavers
completed the sweep.  BSU raced to a 5-1 lead after one period and
increased it to 10-2 after two.  Kenny eck had a paid of goals for the
Saints.  Mike Beaton had 32 saves for the win in net.
 
UW-Superior 11, UW-Eau Claire 4
UW-Superior 8, UW-Eau Claire 3
 
Friday:  The Yellowjackets raced to a 6-0 lead after 16 minutes and never
looked back.  Dustin Fahl, Tracy Dyer, Kevin Sobb, Fred Harbinson, Doug
Smith, and Vance Mattson all got first period scores before the Blugolds
broke through on Dan Granato's score 13 seconds into the second period.
UWS's Vince Devlin made it 7-1 before Bill Houck brought it back to a
five-goal game for UWEC.  Superior then got three more goals in
succession from Sobb, John Murgatroyd, and Rod Graham before Eau Claire
got back-to-back scores from Houck and Jeff Metro.  Jason Radtke closed
out the scoring for UWS.  Dave Graichen made 16 saves for the 'Jackets in
net.
 
Saturday:  The Yellowjackets got goals from eight different players while
racing to a 6-0 lead on the way to the sweep.  Doug Smith started the
string with a score 33 seconds into the contest and Kevin Sobb completed
the explosion at 57 seconds of the second period.  UWEC then got three
straight scores from Matt Loen and Dan Granato twice in the second period
to close to 6-3 before Brent Shaback and Dustin Fahl closed out the UWS
scoring with third period scores.  Dave Graichen had 21 saves in net for
the win.
 
UW-Stevens Point 3, Lake Forest 2
UW-Stevens Point 4, Lake Forest 3
 
Friday:  The Pointers worked to a 3-0 lead before holding off the
Foresters in the final four minutes.  Mike Zambon opened the scoring for
Point with the lone first period score followed by Joe Vancik's goal in
the second and Chad Zowin's in the third to make it 3-0.  But LFC got
goals from Kit Read at 16:04 and Sean Freeman at 16:56 to make it
interesting before UWSP held on for the win.  David Fletcher had 25 saves
for the win for Stevens Point while Sean Keck made 30 saves in a losing
effort.
 
Saturday:  Mike Zambon had a pair of goals to lead UWSP to the sweep.
Andy Faulkner and Zambon gave Point a 2-0 first period lead before Lake
Forest tied it on second period goals from Derek Thiede and Mark
Studebaker.  But Gord Abric gave the Pointers the lead back late in the
second and Zambon tacked on his second goal early in the third.
Studebaker's second goal with under two minutes left completed the
scoring.  Dave Ketola had 20 saves for the win while Sean Keck made 29
stops for LFC.
 
Fredonia State 9, St. Norbert 2
St. Norbert 5, Fitchburg State 2
 
Friday:Fredonia got two in the first, four in the second and three more
in the third to handle the Green Knights in the first round of the RIT
Tournament.  Cameron Knox and Darren Holmes tallied for SNC in a 1:30
span of the third period.  Scott Vettraino had 23 saves in net for St.
Norbert.
 
Saturday:  Five different Green Knights scored and freshman Roby Gropp
made his collegiate debut in net with a win as SNC took the RIT
Tournament consolation title.  Kendal Kelly and Cameron Knox got first
period goals to send St. Norbert on its way.  Silverio Mirao, Mike
Porcaro and Cory Borys also scored for the Knights.  Gropp had 21 saves
in net.
 
Air Force 5, UW-River Falls 3
UW-River Falls 5, Air Force 4
 
Friday:  The Air Force got a pair of third period scores to hold off the
Falcons in Colorado.  AFA scored the lone first period goal before UWRF
tied it on Aaron Arf's score in the second period.  Air Force goals 28
seconds apart gave them a 3-1 lead but Mike Schauer cut the lead to 3-2
at the end of two.  The Academy then got two more goals to open the third
period to put the game away.  Russ Johnson scored for UWRF late to finish
the scoring.  Terry Metro made 26 saves for the Falcons in a losing effort.
 
Saturday:  Mike Schauer scored the game-winner 1:02 into overtime to give
the Falcons the win.  Russ Johnson had tied the game and forced the extra
period with a score 49 seconds before the end of regulation.  Eddie
MacDonald scored a pair of toals and assisted on three others for UWRF.
Jeff Heil had 23 saves in net for the win.
