OK, this just came to me last night, but it seems like an interesting
possibility. So I thought I'd throw it out in the open. It would be
similar to most high school football overtimes, where each team has four
plays to score from the ten yard line, the winner being whoever scores the
most (this process is repeated until a winner is determined). Why not, if
the score is tied at the end of regulation, toss a coin to determine who
goes first, and then give each team a two minute power play on which to
score. This could be a five on four, or a five on three. So Team A
shoots first and scores in 1:35. Then Team B gets their power play. If
they score, the process starts over, if not, Team A wins. Another
possibility: Have the clock count down from 1:35 and whoever scores first
in the least amount if time is the winner. In either case, there
shouldn't have to be an intermission. This would undoubtedly cause the
fans to go nuts (I know I would). Yes, it puts a premium on the team with
the better power play, but it involves a little more than just a breakaway
versus the goalie. I'm not sure what I think of it, but it sounds
exciting to say the least.
